Dog Treat Recipes |
|
I make my own training treats and the following two recipes are favorites with my dogs.
Moc’s Liver Treats (all my dogs likes these, but they can sometimes be a bit crumbly) Experiment with these by adding in molasses, peanut butter, ripe bananas, shredded carrots, shredded apples, etc. My dogs like the variety.
Banana Bites (makes small soft treats that don’t crumble and are easy to break in two, Halo goes nuts for these) (from The Beginner’s Guide to Agility by Laurie Leach)
This variation on the classic Milk Bone biscuit recipe yields a soft, breakable, treat that disappears down canine throats at a phenomenal rate. They are also easy to carry in pockets, without the slimy mess of meat chunks, and make great tossing treats. Ingredients: ½ cup hot water 1 medium-size, ripe banana (mashed) ½ cup powdered milk 1 egg (beaten) 3 cups whole wheat or oat bran flour (I used whole wheat)
Directions: Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. In a large bowl pour hot water over the banana. Stir in powdered milk and egg. Add flour, one cup at a time, until you have a stiff dough. Move dough to a lightly floured surface and roll to ¼-inch thickness. Cut dough into kibble-size squares or use a small cookie cutter. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for fifteen to twenty minutes and remove from cookie sheet immediately. Makes about four cups of treats.
Peanut Butter Carrot Cake (this makes a really good Birthday cake for dogs) 1 cup flour 1tsp baking soda 1/4 cup peanut butter 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1 cup shredded carrots 1 tsp. vanilla 1/3 cup honey 1 egg
Mix flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into greased 8" round cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let cool. Puree cottage cheese in blender for icing. Decorate with more peanut butter and carrots. NOTE: This cake does not rise very much. Also, I did not do the cottage cheese for icing. |
